If you are planning on checking on the quality of the piping in your building, you will need to use test plugs. Test plugs are crucial devices for assessing the performance of new piping. Testing is beneficial for new structures because it will determine the function and efficiency of the plumbing network. You should also consider utilising testing plugs if you are concerned about the current state of your piping systems. This unit will show pressure irregularities if there is pipe damage or other anomalies. Here are basic guidelines for using test plugs.

Purchase a Suitable Match

It is important to purchase testing plugs which are appropriate for your application. Otherwise, the results of your assessment will not be accurate. When choosing a plug, you should evaluate the available materials and opt for the one most compatible with your application. In general, metals such as steel and aluminium are favoured because they can withstand stress. But, there are some quality alternatives made using durable plastics.

Test plugs are also available in different sizes. Therefore, you should check your pipes before choosing the unit. In simple terms, the plug must be a good physical fit for the channels you intend to test. You can determine the best sizing by checking the manufacturer's recommendations. Alternatively, consider consulting your piping testing specialist. Other important selection factors include brand, fluid compatibility, costs and industry grading.

Clean the Installation Point

You should check the installation point before placing the test plug over it. Both new and old piping may have a lot of dirt around this section of the network. Therefore, if you place the testing unit, it will not form a tight seal. Consequently, the obtained results might be unreliable. When preparing for installation, you should plan on cleaning and removing debris and oils. There should be no foreign material trapped underneath the sealing area.

Leave Plug for Some Time

The test plug should be left in place after installation for some time. This is essential for proper assessment of the piping because it allows for the setup to stabilise. For instance, when testing water flow and pressure, you must ensure that the plug is left on for a long enough period to allow for complete saturation of the network. You can check the recommendations made by the plug manufacturers on the wait period. Once the setup is stable, you can check if there are any inexplicable pressure losses. If the test plug indicates a significant loss in the stability of water flow, there might be a leak.
